What a business website really costs

Where the money actually goes in a website project, and how to tell a fair quote from a padded one.

Most quotes look the same on the surface: a number and a delivery date. The difference between a good one and a bad one is what sits underneath it.

Design is usually the largest line item, because it is where decisions get made. Every hour spent agreeing on structure before development saves several hours of rework later.

Development cost tracks complexity, not page count. A ten-page brochure site is far cheaper than a three-page site with accounts, payments and a dashboard behind it.

Then there is the part people forget: hosting, updates, and the small changes you will want in month three. Ask for those numbers up front so the project has no surprise tail.
